About 51˚N Seakayaking

The title 51˚N Seakayaking comes from the latitude that links the South Wales coast with that of Southern Irish coast. As I have links to the city of Cork and plan to paddle that region I wanted a title that reflected that connection. It seemed that the obvious 'Celtic' derivatives were already being used, so after spending a disproportionate amount of time looking at a map trying to come up with a blog title, I realised that the answer had been starring me in the face all the time.

There are some truly exceptional seakayaking blogs out there in the blogosphere and as a prospective beginner to sea paddling I read them with great interest. Stories of great journeys in wild places with wild weather and brilliant photo's, just really truly amazing stuff. I really wanted to start exploring the coastline and start doing some adventures of my own. I became interested in how these adventurers had got to the standard they were, how had they learnt, what mistakes were made on the way etc, however very few documented this early stage development. So standing here at the bottom of the pile looking up at the dizzy heights of those sea paddling masters I thought I'd address this for all those starting thinking of starting their own journey or for anyone else who just might happen to be interested in following my journey.

Me
In the year 2000 I began river paddling but after moving back to South Wales a few years ago I began to notice that my river paddling opportunities were beginning to slip. I had a great time river paddling with a very small group of paddling buddies. With many miles now separating us and opportunities to paddle together being very limited I realised that it was time to take my paddling in a new direction.....After reading a number of excellent inspirational blogs by local sea paddlers I realised that seakayaking was going to be that new direction. These blogs also highlighted that I totally lacked a record of the river adventures I had experienced, and the great times I had with the wonderful people I met. So in for a penny, in for a pound.
